I need to hang a wall cabinet and plan on hanging it on a wall cleat. Based on the depth of the recess on the back of the cabinet the cleat will be 1/2 inch thick. Can I use poplar for the cleat or does it need to be a harder wood?

I've used plywood and solid wood ( Pine, pop, maple, oak) both with no problems, but keep in mind the weight and fastners, glue the cab cleat as well, and do not relie on just the cabinet back/hang strip attach to the top and sides if at all possible.
Make damm sure the wall cleat is finding studs.

Thank You,
Can only hit 1 stud . Will use toggles on the cleat also. I was going to make a wide cleat so I can get 2 to 3 srews through the cleat in to the stud. It's a bathroom cabinet so it won't be as heavy as a kitchen cabinet.
Gotcha. When i was more mobile and not rooted, I moved my shop and wall cabs , milk crates that hung on walls many, many times..I used whatever I had handy for cleats. Surprisingly strong, one crate is full of 10" sawblades and jsut a 1x3 furring strip ripped in two holding it.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Oh, and it can be a very good thing to double check how the nailer is attached to the cabinet, too. There are some already-assembled boxes out there that were built on Mondays.
Discovering that the nailer is attached with only a couple 1/4" staples (and the backk with only 3-4 more) can be an experience--don't ask me how I know <g>
Yes, it was built on Monday...probably first thing in the morning..lots of staples . Not very expensive. What I plan to do is put some screws through the back into the nailer. I wanted to build my own but my wife got impatient. It really is amazing how cheaply a lot of things are made.
probably first thing in the morning..lots of staples
Toss up whether eleventy dozen staples is better or worse than 3-4 . . . or dribbly glue or none at all.
I have this preference for KD (knock down, aka flat-pack) so that I can assemble these things (for better or for worse <sigh>)Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Lots of glue. I'm going to have to cut some of it off so that I can attach the cleat to the box. For fun I just might do a rabbet so the box cleat will fit over the glue. Who knows, if I cut away the excess glue the whole thing may fall apart.
Instead of the cleat, have you considered removing a section of the drywall and installing a piece of 1/2" plywood? I've found it works pretty good.
I had done that when I installed an over-the-stove microwave and wasn't able to hit enough studs. I cut out the drywall, ripped 1/2 inch off some 2X4's, screwed them to the 2X4's in the wall and attached 1/2 inch ply. Had to recess the ply so that I could replace the drywall (I was told that I needed to have the drywall because it was over the stove). Toggled to the ply and screwed to the studs. Worked out great but took some time.
Thank You for your response.
Thank you for your response, to my response, to your inquiry.
Didint realize we were so formal, maybe I should go put some clothes on.:>)
The more informal the better. I just wanted you to know that I appreciate you taking the time to help.
You may be overkilling this for a medicine cabinet, unless you're into really heavy drugs... If dogs run free, then what must be,
Must be, and that is all.

Stand up straight and tall.
In harmony with the cosmic sea,
True love needs no company,
It can cure the soul, it can make it whole,
If dogs run free.
The cabinet is my wife's idea. She's trying to get me organized. No drugs..besides they all say not to store them in the bathroom anyway.
We all blame it on the wives<G> Unless it's a really heavy cabinet, if the back is stout enough, screwing into one stud will hold it, and there's a lot less collateral damage. Now you see this one-eyed midget
Shouting the word "NOW"
And you say, "For what reason?"
And he says, "How?"
And you say, "What does this mean?"
And he screams back, "You're a cow
Give me some milk
Or else go home"
Just jerkiin your chain.
Get a piece of the carpet transition alum strip, cut it in half, one half on wall, one on cab.

Dogbones to you, my man.....
Thanks, it lets you hang pretty close to wall. Been meaning to submit the tip. I thought of it when I needed to hang some fairly large mirrors I built frames for for a client.
