Thanks to those of you who responded to my post. I used the coat hanger deal and here is what I found. My sensor was lying, there were no double studs at the sides of the windows underneath. There were two studs under the window that the sensor didn’t show. The rest of the studs were there but not where expected and some the sensor showed, others it didn’t. Although as far as I could determine there was the 3/4″ baseboard, the 1/2″ gypson, and the one inch sheath boards. My math says that is 2 1/4″ but when I drove in the 3 1/2″ 16d casing nails they didn’t begin to bite until there was only only 5/8″ – 3/4″ of the nail remaining. The baseboard is hanging by a thread and a prayer. Go figure.

The sensors aren't so good on old walls which are variable in thickness and such. Anyway, it's not so important that the baseboard be nailed to the stud -- it's not structural -- just tight to the wall, and a bunch of 2" nails to the sheathing should be just fine (plus a lot faster). Construction adhesive will hold beyond where the gypsum fails, too. Finally, don't forget the magic caulk.
