I am a homeowner and would like to replace the carpet that we have for 5+ years. Our main concern is dust since we are all allergic to it.
Are all carpet the same or some are better than the others? Also we plan to let Home Depot do the
installation. Comments/Suggestions? Thanks.

*. Residential carpeting can be very confusing, but the CRI may be able to sort it out for you.
You might wish to visit the Carper & Rug Institute Web site and order some of their literature
*Hi Henry,You may want to consider cork flooring instead of carpeting. It's what we replace carpet with in homes where the owners are allergic to the dust and mildew.Gabe

Gabe,
Could you please provide some information about
cork flooring? What is it and how much it cost?
Thanks.

Hi Henry,
Picture a 1 foot by 3 foot panel, 1/2" thick, t&g, prefinished cork on top, layer of cork on the bottom, MDF center.
Typical floating floor assembly.
Warmer than carpet, softer than cushion floor, non allergenic, non static, does not harbor mold or mildew and last longer than hardwood strip flooring.
About $4.00 retail in the US

*Henry,My wife has a severe alergy to dust and more specifically dust mites and their fecal matter (politely called dust mite allergen). Dust mite allergy is one of the most common allergies so don't feel alone. There are a number of things you can do to control dust mites in your home. The first is to control humidity, temperature, and particulate matter in house air. You can do this with attachments to your HVAC system or with stand alone units in your rooms. The second is to remove habitat (carpets, heavy curtains, etc)or periodicaly treat habitats with a mitcide, third is to install barriers, such as mattress covers, between you and dust mite habitats. Finally, you should wash bed linens frequently. Before I would invest in new carpets or carpet substitutes like cork I would seek the advice of an allergy specialist (MD). It is possible your sensitivity to dust mite allergin can be reduced through treatment and you may be able to enjoy carpeted floors in your home. One site you should check is [www.allergycontrol.com]. This is a commercial site for a product manufacturer. It also contains some good general information on dust mite allergin control.More than you asked for, I know. But after living with my wife's allergies for the past 14 years I have some sense for what you are going through. It ain't fun.Good luck,Steve
