How does one determine the proportions of head casing, side casing, and apron? I understand how to determine stool length and width and width of horns. And that the length of header equals the stool – for butt casings. On 8′ ceilings, what widths of head, side, and apron look good together?

The carriage house I'm trimming out is being done in simple craftsman-style. Headers are 5/4 cedar 3 1/4" wide and match the length of the stool. Sides and aprons are 3/4" cedar 2 1/4 wide. Aprons have a 30 degree inward taper starting about 3/4 from the top. The stool is 1 1/16" bullnose.

If you know the style you want and are wondering about sizes, try a couple out. Experiment and find out what is pleasing to your own eye, what looks "right" to you. Trust your own judgement, there is an artist in you, let it come out.
If you really get stuck, there is an article about period casings in one of the most recent FHB or JLC. - yb
