I have a catch basin which is accessed through a cover in the crawl space at the rear of the house. From what I’ve been told by others here in Chicago, all the waste and the roof runoff water from the house goes first to the catch basin and then out to the street where the sewer system handles storm and domestic water. Newer houses in my area don’t have catch basins.
My question is do I need to maintain this thing periodically? If so, can I just go in there and shovel out any grease or solids? Or should I have one of those companies that cleans grease traps come out? Or don’t worry about it like virtually everyone I ask who has one?

Maybe you could pay $50 to one of the cleanout companies to come out and inspect it for you, and give a proposal for the next step.
