I’ll be installing lots and lots of cedar shingles on my house. Is there any reason I can’t use my crown stapler to install these things? Is cedar corrosive to “regular” fasteners (not aluminum or stainless)?
I know enough to not use galvinized stuff as that causes streaking.

hot dipped galv nails are traditional and do not streak
typically we use HDG for everything except the face nailing.. when we switch to SS
Yeah, I reread the Cedar Shingle Bureau information and it says don't use electrogalvanized, HDG is ok. My crown staples say "galvanized" so I assume that is electrogalvinized. It's still unclear if it is the cedar or the cedar and moisture that cause the problem.
At any rate...do you hand nail the shingles or shoot them with a gun?

spent about 20 years hand nailing... but we use sidewall guns now..
our favorite is a bostich cn-66Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Yeah, I'm sure you got some time in the hand nailing.
I can get stainless steel staples for my PC narrow crown stapler...it's a 1/4" crown. You see any problem with using that? The Cedar Shingle Bureau says you can staple with 7/16" crown, but I don't see why the crown size would make any difference.
BTW, did you see that post about the guy dying off the ladder? That's why I'm springing for the Alum-a-Pole. I'm not going out like that. I got a family that needs me to live.
I've attached a picture of the front porch I shingled this past weekend (used my galvanized crown staples - hopefully this won't be a problem). Those are pre-primed #1 red cedars. You can also see the gable I'm getting ready to do.

now that's looking very nice !
i guess the 1/4" crown would work..
i just hate staples for sidewall work.. we do a lot of shingle thieving , and staples are a buggerMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Yeah, every time I drive a staple I think "man, if I ever have to get this shingle out..."
I'm gonna go look up the nailer you use.

I did a addition job last winter, and the contractor before me had use staples on white cedar shingle. I was using a shingle ripper show I could meet the new shingle to the old. I cursed up and down the staging "You Mother F#!@*" show I ripped the siding on the whole peak! LMAO! it was not a fun day.....
I picked up the Bostitch N66C gun today (well I ebayed it). Now I just gotta poke around and find fasteners. I'll call the local "real" lumberyard tomorrow and see what they have.
Mike - do you use Bostitch fasteners or other brand? You happen to have a model number on them? I'm looking for I guess 1.5" HDG.

dj... a good internet source is Maize Nails....
i buy mine at the lumber yard (Bostich )
i buy thickcoat galv 4d ring shank for the most applications..
and a box of the SS for face nail
i've also bought 3 1/2 d for WC

Mike,
And all
Have you ever tried sharpenning the hook end of the shingle thief tool? a grindder can amke it just right so that when you hook the staples, a tap on the hilt with your hammer will cut it right off. I like to use the grinder on every thief I've ever had, not all to sharpen hooks, but to flatten the steel. The old thiefes were better steel and sleek and flat. What you can buy now looks like it was forged in one of China's cheapest slave labor camps. They are too thick to slide under a shigle when you first bring them home to the shop and introduce them to the other tools, so it needs a little hazing party before it can go out on the job.

just what is a crown stapler? a bunch of places call it this but I swear they are just too lazy to callit a NARROW crown stapler, as this is what most staplers are designated as, or would you put up crown molding using a stapler? I mean, I have WIDE crown staplers, and EXTRA WIDE crown staplers, but I don't have anything that says that I have to use only this stapler to install crown moldings...OK, I'm done now.....
