Ceiling strapping

What is a good material to use for ceiling strapping.

    What is the purpose for adding the strapping?

    Leveling or to make a smooth plane?

    Or sound transfer?

    Or to make 16” vs 24” centers?

      Ease of running romex without having to drill floor joists, add strength, take away floor deflection, Armstrong surface mount plank ceiling or drop ceiling. Primarily for strength and wiring.
