I am installing a backsplash with 4×4 ceramic tile. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in the following?
My wife is a very good painter and we would like to paint a design on a few of the plain tile. I need to know how to seal in the design so it won’t smear or wear off if this is possible, I appreciate any suggestions and thankyou

I'd try a local pottery studio and see if you can paint with glazes then have the tiles refired. It should be simple to do a test on one tile to see if it works.
thanks wayne this may have to be the answer but I was hoping maybe a varathane type product would work
bob. In the 60's a glass sign painter would paint the message on the glass, then paint again over that with a clear cote. You might get some mileage out of that if you can find the clear coat. I don't know that varathane would "stick" like the stuff the old sign painters used.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

along that same line ... I'm wondering if the same paint the guy hand painted the lettering on my van with would work?
that lasted thru 3 or 4 Pgh winters/summers ... and I had a hell of a time removing it with oven cleaner.

As Wayne suggested painting with glaze and re-firing the tiles is the best solution but if DW never used the medium before there is a learning curve because the resulting color may be quite different from the appearance of the glaze before firing. So a good tile painter knows what color glaze to put on keeping in mind the finished result she wants to achieve.
In your case DW may be happier using paint that can be use on tiles and put a clear coat over. That way DW can get the exact painting that she wants.
You want to keep her happy, right?
Look around. There are a number of "Pottery R U" places around. They have blank ceramics speicalist in DIY finishing and then they fire them.
Do things like kids birthday parts and other special events.
I suspect that they could set you up.
I just made up that name, but look around.
