Chimney Cap Replacement

The chimney cap replacement shown in the July 98 FHB pg 76 seems a reasonable approach to the problem of leaks. Are there any alternatives applicable to a southwestern location? +110F to -10F.
What about a sheet metal cap over the whole top of the chimney?
