I own a house older than I am and the original brick chimney built in 1964 has a bunch of settlement crack in the morter joint’s. The firebrick liner inside the firebox also has a few cracks in it. I’m thinking it’s time to replace the chimney and possibly the firebox as well. I can frame a chimney and set a new fireplace if necessary.

Any suggestions on what I’m in store for?

You might wanna include a photo of how the stack ties into the house and roof, whether the house is brick or frame, if there is anything on this stack other than a fireplace, how many flues. . . . That'll make a difference.
Either way, you're in for dirty job. You may need to upgrade the footer, depending on how it was built to begin with. (Those cracks may well an indicate inadequate footer.) Check your local codes.

Typical 12" x 12" footings. Single Flue, nothing else is tied into the stack. The fireplace is flush with the interior wall. The Chimney and firebox extend into the back yard.I'm thinking simple new fireplace with chimney clad in stacked stone. ML
