I got some bad advice about grouting slate tile and now it is really cloudy. I tried 409 and that made it worse. Would muratic acid do the trick?

I would try the muriatic acid. Not full strenght, mind you. pour a couple gallons of water to the bucket, then add about 10% of that volume of muriatic acid. wear gloves, and have lots of ventilation, cause the stuff does not smell nice. scrub with a stiff nylon brush, dipping in the acid solution often. The grout between the tiles should fizz just a little bit. If it's not fizzing, it's probably not doing much for you.
10% is a place to start, gradually add more if that doesn't work. I wouldn't go any stronger than 1:2 HCL to H20. Acid wash is only effective on concrete for a limited time, if it's too far cured, this won't work very well.

Thanks! I grouted the tile 3 days ago. Do you think there is still a window of opportunity?
yes, work away, I've used scotch bright pads also. if these have a glaze finish be careful using pads.
Next time seal tile before grouting

thanks for the advice.

I'd say there's hope for you. Get going on it ASAP though.
With some stones/tiles a wire brush will work, but often it will leave marks of it's own. I would try it as a last resort, in a hard to see area.zak
