I am having a new house built. It has a family room with a cathedrial ceiling. The ceiling spans 33’4″ with the center ridge at 16’8″ and a 7-12 pitch. It has 2×12 roof rafters @ 24″ on center with NO structural ridge only 2×6 colar ties 3′ down from the top of the ridge to the top of the 2×6. Will these colar ties prevent the rafters from seperating from the ridge?

It sounds a little suspect to me too!

*I agree with both Fred and blue...Does the plan set have an engineers or architects stamp?...If so, give them your question, if not, then go get your stamp.Near the stream,J
*Joe,I just went through some quick calculations and, unless you have no snow load, there's just no way you can get enough nails into that 2x6 (used at their design stress) to react to the forces involved. Maybe strong metal gussets will work but I agree with FredL, I think splaying would be a problem. DH
*Hi Fred, I just went through some rough numbers with a snow plus DL of 40lb without knowing anything about the details of Joes house so call this "guesswork", not "engineering analysis", but if the 2x6 is DF for example it can handle the tension if the bolts were sized accordingly. Those 2x12's however, would be stressed at about 4x their rated design strength with that load. I don't know the local codes there though, so as it was said "it looks suspicious to me."
*I've had to hoist some pretty large structural members up to carry a 33' roof! The collar ties would hidethe beam, so what is thereason they don't simply add one?Blue
