My wife and I are looking to do the general contracting work on the construction of our new home and we’re in the process of estimating costs.
I wanted to know if there was an accepted equation for figuring the number of squares of siding we’ll need, and how much to figure in for extra/error (7%). I’m coming up with about 34 squares, but in calling for quotes – I’m being told that 34 is WAY too much and to recalculate. For what it’s worth, house footprint dimensions ar 50′ * 42′ (approx 20′ high, 2 sides with 50′ * 12′ triangles -apex) – windows on 50 * 20 sides (includea apex’s) are negligable, front is probably 60% windows, door and garage, back is approx 250 sq. ft windows.
We’re planning on using James Hardie – Hardiplank siding. I’d also be interested in feedback on this product.
HELP
Thanks in advance

34 sounds right...i got 42 without deducting for windows or doors...
but your dimensions sound funny...
anyways.. i always take my siding off the elevations..
you do have scale drawings of the four elevations , right ?
then you convert the areas to siding.. depending on product exposure...
*Given what you report I come up with 3430 SF but I don't usually deduct for windows except large opennings like garage doors etc. Reason being you need to act for waste somehow. If I figured exact surface dimensions then I'd need to add 10 - 15% for waste. Including opennings usually acounts for it.You could easilly need 40 squares but I caan't see the details.
*Moose, I come up with 4280 square feet {184' perimeter x 20'; total area of gable is 50' (run) x 12' (height)}. Don't worry about deducting for openings. I agree with Mike in thinking the dimensions odd. The gable end is the long dimension of the house? That's atypical. Good luck.Jon
*I'm the odd man out here. I merely take the plans to either the lumberyard or siding supplier and say "figure it out". They quote out all the pieces, amount, nails, trim, coilstock, everything. If they're off, then one of their small trucks (pickup), runs out whatever they shorted me on.
*I used to let the lumberyard do takeoffs for their quotes, but I got tired of paying a lot more money for all the things they missed.
*Mike, know exactly what you're talking about. However, the lumberyard has toed the line; to compete with the Home Despot and the like, my local ones have tons more services that actually work for me. I can drop off a print, pictures, measurements and what I want in the morning, and by noon have a 95% accurate materials estimate, and by 5pm have a quote to the customer. That 24-hour turnaround (with my suppliers help), has helped me out quite a bit in growing my business. Anything I can do (or others can do for me), that make me more successful is the path I'm on. Taking 20 minutes of basic measurements and pictures is a whole lot more profitable than spending two hours measuring out a "possible" siding client, particularly in vinyl.
