Just curious! Has anyone tried using white portland and masonry instead of green to try to acheive better color results?

Sorry to jump in the middle but I have to ask for information from the beginning on concrete countertops. I have found hundreds of places that will make and ship them to you but not on how to. The closest I have come is an article in issue #90 of Fine Home Building but cannot get a copy of that back issue. I would appreciate direction on info (ie; mixes, addiditives, plactisizers, ect..) on doing it myself. Appreciate any info anyone can give.

*We used white portland for our kitchen, and it turned out rather nice. I shortened the cabinets so that the planned 2" slab netted out at 36" AFF. A detachable form created a 1 1/2" overhang. I milled some 3/4" radius cove for the bottom of the form as well as the top, but looking back, I should have just used an edging tool. I used 30# felt, expanded metal lath and 3/8 rebar. The white portland, masonary sand and fine aggregate was troweled smooth. We hoped to rent a 12" power trowel, but couldn't find one. Polyurethane was used sparingly to create a mottled affect.I had to strip some back off to get what I wanted. I then washed the whole thing with muratic acid. Then, when dry, two coats of poly. I envited an artist over and he thought that it was quarried stone! We have been in the house just over two years and get a variety of facial expressions when we tell people about it. When they acctually see it they usually say 'Wow'. I hope to make it a signature on my up comming spec houses.

Doug, white portland, yes. Depends on the clarity of the desired color.
Chas, do a search on both the current board and in the archives. there's plenty of info to be found. Post again if you have additional Q's.
Good luck to both,
Mongo
