J.D.,
I’m looking at possibly doing insurance work in Westchester Co. I’m told that I need to get a special license in order to be a contractor there.
Is there anything you can tell me about it or what I need to do?
I went to college in Briarcliff Manor and worked in towns around there, but that was late ’80s, early ’90s.
Thanks for the help.

The rules are different in each state, but you should be able to get all the info you need from your state's website. Look for business and professional licensing, certification, etc.

Worse yet is NYS. We don't have state licensing as we are smart enough, ya right, to realize that schemes to license cont. are mostly taxing schemes with no enforcement teeth behind them. We leave that bad word up to local municipalities. In this case Westchester County.
If he moved north a couple of counties or west, he would not need a license to work!

Tash,
go to or search for westchester.gov.
Look for the department of consumer protection.

Let me know where you find liability insurance will you please?
Requirements are basically liability ins, a drivers lisence, comp or a waiver and some money to fork over.
Let me know how you make out. I'm on the edge of going back in the hole myself.
Get back into what, Eric? Contracting?Have you found it difficult to get insured?Hey, if I get some work, maybe I can hire/sub to you. You're closer to Westchester than I am, I'd bet.New Jersey is stupid with contractor licensing. $100ish, proof of liability ins, background check. No test.I believe you are required to have WC, but not asked to prove it.As I understand it, if you've been sued or convicted of a felony, you can't a license. You CAN get elected Senator. But can't be a contractor.Just dumb.Glenn
A running joke in CA is that you need a license to cut hair, give manicures or pedicures, groom dogs, or to provide any of several hundred services to the public. And, all licenses require proof of a minimum level of training, experience, and competence before you're allowed to practice your chosen trade or profession. There are no requirements, however, to get elected to any public office. - lol
New York STATE does not require or have contractor licensing. Nor does my impoverished Essex county, far upstate from Westchester.
So do as suggested, and check with W.
But wait until you find out what it costs for a license to do G.C. work. You will not believe it. You'll think they've got the zeroes wrong.
Blame New York and all its lawyers, and in particular, something called the scaffolding law.
Shakespeare was right, in having one of his lead characters speak, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

Eric pretty much nailed it....westchester.gov will have all the pertinent info.
Many towns however do not want to hear about waivers for comp.
They want everybody who steps onto a jobsite covered.

I don't disagree with the thinking there.I see there is a test now. What's that like?Glenn
JD,
If you would, and off the board is fine.
Can you tell me who you have liability with and $? And your cost for comp as well?
I'd really appreciate that if you could.
ps There's a green bike in it for you!
Is Walters open yet?
