The great buildings of the world that have copper roofs, have green roofs. You can clean and seal the copper and create a high maintaince roof from a low one. As soon as you seal the roof you will have to keep it sealed all the time. Once the sealer is breached tarnshing will be blotchy and you will be faced with stripping the entire roof.
You can polish the roof periodically without sealer or you can let it acquire its natural patina.
What did you think you were getting with a copper roof? Didn't anyone tell you that it would tarnish?
*To add to what Mike said, there are chemicals available to accelerate tarnish process and produce the patina color.
