A display ad in yesterdays paper from The Countertop Company in Richmond:
30-35 sf $59/sf * And then in small print at the bottom: Edging, cutouts and removal of old countertop extra cost. Min order 30 sf.

Welcome to advertising.
My Dad once tried to advertise in our small hometown paper
"Free Room Additions" in small print "with the purchase of our carpet or hardwoods."
He changed his mind thinking that a smarter mind might figure out a get around.
As for this ad it's not unusual. The choice of edges, cut outs and labor to install are big variables. The only easy thing to offer is a firm price on their product cost.
That price seems like the going rate.

I think that it is a little on the high side. Here I see $39.And I heard a designer say that there is lot of cheap granite around. But those prices are for "plain" materials and that there are lots of patterns around that are much more expensive. And the number of fabricators see to poping up any place that there is a spare 1000 sq ft for a shop.I saw a sign the other day for the Grace L Ferguson Storm Door and Granite countertop company..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I recently paid 50 bucks Canadian a square foot. He charged a hundred bucks for the sink cut out, and included a 4 inch back splash and a nice edge treatment with a jog for the sink cabinet. He already had the slab in his shop so I didn't have to pay transportation. He did a nice job but it isn't cheap.

whats your question or comment?
wondering what you should pay for granite for your place or just commenting on deceptive advertising ?

All but one puppies in happy homes..just one to go..whew!
Two things: commenting on misleading (not necessarily deceptive) advertising, and throwing out what is be advertised for granite in this area."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Price sounds the same as here...
Granite is like anything else... They have a certain way they charge for it.: ie SF, edging, cutouts... Here, some places will throw in a standard edge and 1 cutout and maybe even a sink in the base price. I think the sink thing is because they have so many problems with customer supplied sinks not fitting in the hole that was cut out as directed.... Once you get used to the way it works you know what to expect.
FYI - different profiles of edging can cost different $$ They often have a level 1, 2 and 3.
It's like the trim carpenters I deal with - they have a base rate per Sq Ft, which covers the windows, doors, baseboard - sounds pretty cheap - but then a list of extras as long as my arm... So much per piece of crown... so much per piece of chair rail, etc, etc, etc.

I just got a quote for 83.25 SF of top, 13.75 SF of backsplash, and 45 LF of edge profile for just a hair under $4k.
That includes two cut-outs and a 18ga. undermount sink.
