Curious to see what your paying for design or drafting services. In my area of the midwest, it seems the going rate is about $1.25 p.s.f., and anywhere from $40.00 to $60.00/hr. I’m talking new plans, or heavy plan mod’s.

Here in Tennessee, a plan by an architect can cost $3 per sq. ft. or $65 per hour, depending on house complexity and number of detail sheets produced.
Homes by "home designers" generally fall in the range you stated but are usually less detailed and don't offer the technical support and accountability of an architect.
