There was a Barrel Vault Thread in this forum recently with lots of links and photos.
Groin Vault Math Home Page : Don't be freaked out by the math. There are links to examples on how to lay out the intersecting barrels using strictly geometry.

Hi Perez.
I have a pretty easy method for framing cross vaults.
Can you give me the room dimensions and spring height?
I thank you for helping out on this. It's my second cross vault but I wasn't very happy with my first one. I have a hallway where I'm framing three cross vaults but the hall needs to be a continous barrel arch. Where I'm having trouble is finding the groin arch radii. I appreciate all the klnowledge you can share.
Can you share your easy method?
I have to do three of these fairly soon.
I keep putting it off, but it is getting to the nitty-gritty.Friends help you move.

Begin by determining the dimensions of either one of the barrels. One of the following online calculators will help you find the radius or major/minor axes of your barrel.
Circular Arch Calculator
Elliptic Arch Calculator ... Given: Major or Minor Axis
Elliptic Arch Calculator ... Given: Two Arch Dimensions
Elliptic Arch Calculator ... Given: Two points on the Ellipse
The measurements of the Valley and remaining barrel are based on the first barrel.
These Example Sketches of an Irregular Cross Vault assume the first barrel is circular (it may be elliptic ... no reason why it can't be if you wish). The arches are segmented; an equal height has been subtracted from all barrel heights. Again, you may create a vault using the semi-ellipses if you want.
The remaining ellipses are based on the diameter of the circle. The calculation employs the ratio of the circular arch width/diameter = 72/90 = .8.
This proportion is constant for the other two ellipses.
