I’m looking at putting cultured stone around a gas fireplace. I read on the culture stone page that you could put the stone veneer over dry wall? The installation instructions suggest using a adhesive called formula I?
Has anybody done this? Suggestion? Tips? Will it hold?
Thanks Brent

Brent, if the instructions say you can, then it should work fine. Durock cement board would probably be a better choice in my opinion.
*My choice would be cement board as well,Gabe
*Even given the manufacturer's instrucdtion, I'd be nervous as hell doing this. I'd go with w/ hardi-backer, or durock for fear of callback, and having to repair.

Thanks for your opinions. I will do it right the first time and rip the drywall off and put durock in.

Brent-
Check out http://www.hardibacker.com
Look into if this would be possible to install over the existing drywall. This would save you some time, and cleanup.
*Definitely install over existing drywall if you can. I think the rough cement surface of Durock may be a better substrate than the smooth Hardibacker board if a mortar is used for installation. Especially on the vertical.IMHO, jiml
*Last job I was on the carpenters installed plywood sheathing and then the subtrade installing the cultured stone put tar paper, metal lath, scratch coat and then cultured stone.

Even w/ cement board, the instructions call for expanded metal lathe attached w/ nails that go into the framing at least an inch. Having installed some on block, I cannot imagine drywall supporting the weight of the stone or handling the mortar well.
*I would like the durock would work as the scrath coat and you wouldn't need metal lathe. One way or another I have to rip off the drywall. The build up will put me to far out over the fireplace. Thanks Brent

Each manufacturer has its own installation guidlines and instructions. The brand I use out of Napa, CA suggestes/requires that it be installed over a mortar (type S) and expanded lathe base.
I like to follow instructions.
