I am building a porch using polyvinyl porch posts for the first time. These posts have steel posts on the inside on them. What is the best way to cut these posts without damaging the vinyl on the exterior.

Short Blade Chisel
We always have a wide chisel on my belt for fit and fitting because it’s often faster to grab the chisel rather than going back to the saw.
Milwaukee M18 Fuel 18v Cordless Circular Saw (2730-22)
This saw features a brushless motor, a magnesium baseplate and blade guard for durability, LED lights that illuminate the cutline, and a well-designed rafter hook.
Standard Marking Chalk
We like white chalk because it’s non-permanent and wears off easily — this is especially helpful when marks are exposed and need to disappear.
Foam Gun
We like using a professional foam-dispensing gun as opposed to straw cans because it allows you to easily control bead size and reuse the can.

I'm thinking cut away the exterior vinyl portion, then go in with the Recip (sawzall) with a long enough blade, doing this in steps should keep you from burning the vinyl, but don't you have a capitol or base trim to cover any of your minor flubs?(click on my screen name and find my e-mail addr. if you want drop me a line...)
Scribe once, cut once!
Go to a good tool supply and look for a metal cutting circ saw blade W/teeth, not an abrasive wheel. If you can't find one easily or if you want me to check on the manufacturer (PC is one) let me know. I think the ga. metal won't make a diff as I've used mine on some pretty thick stuff. Take a scrap of plastic lam. and tape it to the bottom of the saw base. Take it slow and give it a try. The only worry or concern might be the vinyl cover melting as you cut. What does the manufacturer recommend?

I cut two last year and used a sawsall with no problem. If your a little rough it will be covered anyway. The important thing is to get a straight cut on the interior pipe which is going to hold all the weight.
