I’m new to the business side of construction, and can’t seem to find answers for recourse of non-payment. My partner and I gave a “friend” a house to frame (the customer came to us first), because we didn’t have a crew. Part of the verbal agreement (everyone else we make sign contracts but this guy, and he’s the one to screw us, go figure) was that we could work on the house when we had some downtime. Its been over a month since the house was finished being framed, and we are not getting paid for hours worked. He’s gotten paid himself. Can I put a lien on the house even though we had an informal agreement? Is small claims a realistic/effective option?
Any direct advice, or where to go to find answers, would be much appreciated.
