We are in the process of fixing up this deck, new decking, rails, and stairs, etc.
When we removed the decking I noticed that the beam closest to the house is lower than the joists at one end of the beam by about 3/8″ . The only joist sitting on the beam is the one on the opposite side.
There were no nails or other attachment from any of the joists to the beam.
Judging by the weathering of the top of the beam I’m guessing that the joists never sat on the beam.
I tried pulling the joist w/the 3/8″ gap down to the beam with a clamp. but that put the top of the joist out of plane with the band joist.
My first thought on fixing this is to take out the existing beam and make a new one out of ripped down 2×12’s.
Any thoughts on alternate methods would be appreciated.
