I need to replace my very boring deck railing. Trees falling do not help maintain you deck. Anyone have a site where I can view different railing systems so I can add some pizzaz to my deck?
Thanks, Mike

Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.

This company has some nice looking products, although i have not used them.

I designed and built my railing a few years ago, and am pleased with the way it came out. Made from Ipe- tough to work but nice wood.
Surf around. There are tons of photos on the web.
I got to say friend, that is a nice balluatrade(sp?) Although, is that spacing code in your area. Here in Alaska we have to stay within 4 inches. All I ever wanted in life was an unfair advantage...
Cap'n
Similar code requirements here- I meet the 4" sphere requirements.

BMan,
If you don't mind me asking, how did you attach the handrail/subrail to the railing posts. I'm getting ready to start installing my own Ipe handrail, and can't make up my mind on attachment method.
Any advice you could share would be greatly appreciated.
Matt
Kreg pocket screws and glue.
The intermediate rails which appear to float between the posts are support by the Deckorators balusters. Although they appear to be continuous through the intermediates, some actually stop inside a flat bottomed (forstner bit) hole. Aligning all those holes would have been much easier with a drill press.
Some of my rails are curved, which were cut from larger stock rather than try to bend what is known as iron wood.
Thanks!
Wow.........that is freakin' gorgeous!

Wow, that's awesome, IMO.
Let me ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind -
1. I've never worked with IPE, but I'm assuming you have some sort of finish on it - what was it?
2. Was this taken right after building? If so, what does it look like now?
Thanks,
jamie

The railings were completed about 4 years ago. Since then, I applied Cabots Australian Timber Oil once. The railings still look good, but the decking needs another application this summer.
As you likely know, Ipe is very hard. The 6x6 verticals in my railing system were lagged into the framing from underneath. I pre-drilled holes into the end of the Ipe, then used an impact wrench to tighten the lags. The pilot hole had to be 1/32" smaller than the lag, or the air compressor driven impact wrench could not generate enough torque to turn the lag- heads would snap off instead. Trial and error.
I am very happy with the end product and the minimal maintenance required. It looks like I will have to stain the decking every other year, and railings and vertical surfaces every 3-4 years. In my opinion, that is a small price to pay for the look of real wood over the composite and plastic options. This is the front of my house, so I wanted do something nice.
Thanks for the comments.
Thanks for all the information. For some reason I never thought to Google deck rail images. My bad. I have been gone to North Dakota for 5 days and hence the late look at replies - thanks for all your efforts. I actually like the look of pipes - have no idea why but it suits my taste. Mike

some options from one company.
Google images, Deck Railings, go to the book store and flip through a few deck building books.
What type of style are you after?
2x2 on the deck, 1x3 on the steps

I use the ones CAG posted. They have a nice system and they look good and last a long time, also very affordable.
I have not used the woodway but I've seen them before and they look very nice, have a very good way to hide the fasteners, etc. But they are wood (cedar) and they require maintenance and I've heard that they are very expensive.
Here's mine. A little twist on a classic style.
Vertical grain doug fir. Old posts were too short by today's standards, so I made decorative capitals to raise the rail up and notched them to let the vertical-oriented 2x4 under the rail sit on the old post top.

You guys are just too much! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.I just poured piers for my new deck, so I'm looking for ideas. Rod
Great railing, but what the------is with the DISH placement???
"what the------is with the DISH placement???"Clear sight line between two 100+ foot cedars, low enough to sweep snow off it in winter.

There are a couple of shots of an interior stair I did a couple of years ago here: http://s164.photobucket.com/albums/u23/atcarozza/Trim%20Photos/
All the pieces were stock porch-rail parts (except newels). I did sand the inch and a quarter baluster stock to eliminate the radiused corners. The short blocks I cut at
3 7/8" to pass the 4" code requirement. They were spaced 12" OC IIRC.
Feel free to copy it or modify it to fit your needs.
I just used Google Images to see what I'd get for "deck railing". The first few pages give a fairly good sample of styles.
