I will admit that I do not build very many decks however I am trying to ease myself into the market for them. I am currently bidding a 12’ by 19’ deck (30” above ground). The decks that I have done in the past turned out very nice but I do have some minor technical questions.
First: I have suggested that we put screen over the joist before the decking because she has future plans to screen in part of the deck. I was planing to use fiberglass screening because of the ease of working with it. Is this a good idea?
Second: I have heard varying rules of thumb about deck board spacing. This is a standard 5/4” by 6” treated decking. Some say space with a 16p. nail, some say butt them together. The nail sounds like the plan to me. I assume that the “butt it together” guys use wet lumber and hope that it’ll dry out and shrink. My thought is if some of the boards were dry and got wet, they’d expand and cause problems.
I’ve seen you all out there in various posts with tag lines advertising Pro Deck, and other desk specialties. I need your advice. As I mentioned before, decks for me aren’t the norm. I do around 3 a year and you guys probably do 3 or more per week.
Thanks again in advance!
