I had a friend help with the deck and I am trying to finish myself.
I am working on putting the railings up. The question I had is he
put the 2×6 on the inside of the 4×4 posts and I am wondering how to
to finish the outside if I put a 2×8 in front I will have a gap where
the deck boards end. What is the best route in finishing the front?
Thanks,
Shaun

Shaun, you lost me, can you post a sketch or splain it a little clearer?
*shaun... you will probably have to put the railings on the inside also...if your posts extend thru the deck to the bottom of the rail.... one typical detail is to use a 2x6 cap nailed flat accross the top of the posts..with a 2x4 nailed to the front of the post and supporting the 2x6 capthen you have vertical 2x2 balusters that get fastened to the back of the 2x4 and end against the outside of the 2x6 your friend fastened to the inside of the posts....the top of these balusters touches the bottom of the 2x6 cap....these balusters have to be spaced so they are even.. but no further apart than 4 inches ( so a 4 inch ball will not pass thru them.....a lot of jurisdictions no longer allow any type or railing sytem or design that can be climbed..thus the vertical balusters....there are other designs that you can do.. the one i described is pretty typical..b but hey, whadda i no ?

*Without clarification from Shaun... I'm guessing that his friend attached a 2x6 joist to the inside of the 4x4 posts and cut off the decking material flush with this joist. Shaun now wants to run a 2x8 skirt around the outside of the posts and will end up with a gap around the perimeter of the deck because the deck boards were cut off too soon. If that is the case, then when the skirt is nailed on there needs to be an additional 5 inches of deck surface if he wants his deck flush with the skirt. One solution: Add a ledger (2x2) to the joist, nail on the skirt at the same level and then attach another deck board notched between the posts and parallel to the skirt. If the deck boards are 2x6 they can then be left to overhang the skirt and the outside top edge could be rounded over for a finished look.If I read the post wrong????
*Buy your friend a beer and get him to explain what he had in mind.
