Delta Shaper Question

Tomar | Posted in Tools for Home Building on August 22, 2004 01:17am

I bought a slightly used 3HP Delta ‘Platinum Edition’ Shaper.  One question – – why does the miter slot run perpendicular to the fence?  I posted over on Knots but I’m not getting any response, thanks.

Are you sure the fence is on right?

On my shaper the slot runs parallel to the fence.

It's attached into 'pre-drilled factory' threaded holes, and it's 'pictured' perpendicular on the owners manual.  The other Delta models are all parallel.  Yours, I'm sure, is a Delta, but not the 'Platinum' Edition.  Correct?

The fence can in either direction on your shaper. parallel or perpendicular to the miter slot, depending on the way you want to use it

          Like this:

"Delta's fence is the best. The opening at the cutter has the greatest range of adjustment. It's the easiest to accurately adjust and use. And I really like that you can use the fence on both axes of the table (front to back/left to right), offering the most use from Delta's large work surface. I ran long runs of trim across the length of the table, and I used the short side for raised panels, which provides more support for the width of the panel, resulting in a better cut......"

Barry, thanks for the input.  Maybe I'm missing something.  I haven't used it yet (just aquired it recently), but it only seems to go one way.  I'll check it out more thoroughly tonight or tomorrow and get back.

No, mine's an old Cresent(sp?), but the two that we have at work have the slot run parallel to the fence. Neither are Deltas.

I cant imagine why yours would run that way, and then the manual shows it that way to.

Must be something to it, but I don't have a clue. Somebody will come along and explain it. Have you tried Delta customer service?

No, I haven't tried service.  I actually figured some of you guys would have the 'real' answers, without the 'long distance runaround'.

All of the cabinet shapers by delta were set up that way .  Most of the time that the miter is used the fence is not . but the old deltas that I have also have holes sothat the fence can be mounted in any of four possitions.

Don, thanks for the reply, and I agree if you're using the miter your usually not using the fence, but when the miter is running perpendicular, the fence would have to be removed, or it would be in the way.

Thanks to all for the replies.  I rechecked the manual and the machine, and the fence can be mounted in two separate directions.  It hadn't occured to me there would be any logical way other than 'parallel', but I guess as 'Len' stated over at knots, the theory is based on 'operational choices' on a rectangular table.  Seems a little inconvenient, but it does leave you 'choice'.  And for those of you that have been polite enough not to say it - - I know, next time just READ THE MANUAL!

I'm not familiar with the platinum model but I had a 3HP 3PH Delta/Rockwell shaper and the miter slot was definitely parallel to the fence. There not holes that would allow the fence to be mounted otherwise. When you're coping the ends of cabinet door rails you will want to use both the miter gauge and the fence... or at least the first half of the fence, depending on how you make your setups. As far as I'm concerned the miter slot has to be parallel to the fence. I've seen a lot of other shapers and setup is the same.
