Is there a cavity depth beyond which dense-packing is no longer efficient, feasable of practical? I am starting a barn renovation project where we plan to insulate wall, ceilings and floors. The ceiling will be topped with a deck that can be walked on and will span an area perhaps 30×17′. I’m not sure yet how we will span this but I’m thinking that these cavities could be pretty big.

bill... so far i've done 2x10 floor joist systems... and got good results..DP
in the attics we do from 12" to 24" but almost impossible to get DP.. but it can still be better than settled density...if you use the material itself to constrain the open blow...
*Mike, Why aren't you using that glory wall system to DP the attic floor joists ?
*cause i can get minimum R-50 without DP...never do hard when u can do easy...
