Are there any good resources for plans or ideas on how to take a basic cape house and dramatically enlarge it in a well designed way so it doesn’t end up looking like a hodge podge lodge?

Capes generally lend themselves well to expanding. Try a local building designer or architect. This is your best bet to get what you want, and just as importantly what you may be able to afford. Maybe a set of "phased" drawings?? For ideas I'd suggest plan books, I think Home Planners had a series of Capes with different options for expanding. The trouble with this approach is the main shell and layout are identical, with optional rooms shown such as a family room, additional bedroom(s), etc. Most capes can be modified without extending the basic footprint by adding shed or gable dormers to the usable roof area, a very economical way to acheive extra sq.footage.
Good Luck,
