Plywood: alternating plies of random strips of wood, laminated together into varying thicknesses and grades. Structural.
MDF: medium density fiberboard. Compressed wood dust made into sheets of various thicknesses. Smooth surfaces, takes paint well, commonly used as panels. Some have decorative veneers applied.
MDO Plywood. Medium density overlay. Plywood of various thicknesses with a smooth paintable hard paper like veneer on one or both sides. Sometimes called sign board. Very good for paintable exterior panels.
