I am remodleing a kitchen the present island has a sink with garbage disposal. Can i install a dishwasher in the island? If so how does it need to be vented?

You can install the dishwasher in the island. It doesn't need to be vented, since the sink is vented. Just hook it up to the disposer. Be sure to knock out the knock out or your dw won't drain. I've come across numerous disposer replacements where the home owner didn't ko the ko. The value of air gaps is debatable. I've installed them in a number of positions, or not used them. I think they are ugly on the sink or counter.
A few codes apparently require the air gap, above the "flood rim" of the sink. But I think most modern DWs include an air gap internally that most codes willl accept, without a separate air gap.
