Has anyone had any experience installing and living with an in-ground, vinyl liner pool? There are several brands and dealers on the net. From what I can tell, these are the same units that pool contractors are installing in my locale. I have seen the installation details, and they don’t look too bad. Does anyone have any advice/recommendations?

Tom,
We had a vinyl lined inground pool installed earlier this year. I watched it go in. With two exceptions, it all seemed to be very straight forward. The first was digging the hole and getting the depth, slopes and contours right. The second was troweling off the floor and sloped sides to the right contour. They used a mud composed of cement and little foam beads mixed in a special machine. While otherwise straight forward, there are a lot of details that need to be right to get a good result. Overall, it is not a project that I would want to do myself. I think there is a learning curve on something like this and if you are only going to do one it is not worth getting up to speed to do it yourself. I note that our contractor had a small track hoe and a Bobcat on site, mostly sitting idle, for the better part of a month. However, when you need it, you need it. One thing I did do was run the electric lines for the pump and yard lights. They nocked off $500 for this. Cost me about $100 for trenching and $100 for material, half of which was for the timer. If you can finish concrete you could save some there too.

Tom,
I had a pool installed about 11 years ago. As for vinyl liner pools go check out the Foxx brand. it's a bit more expensive but the way it is engineered I feel it is one of the best on the market. depending on where you live and how good your drainage is I would strongly recommend drain tile around the perimeter of the walls. I had to do this after it was backfilled and it wasn't easy. I never thought that surface ground water would cause the liner to lift up. I do most everything myself but after watching the pool company do it I wouldn't even attempt it. good luck.
