Does anybody know what is difference between Cap sheet roll vs Mineral Surface roll?

Cap Sheet from home depot is
https://www.homedepot.com/p/GAF-Tri-Ply-SBS-Granular-Cap-sheet-3-in-x-32-25-ft-100-sq-ft-Net-Membrane-Roll-for-Low-Slope-Roofs-in-White-37AH920/100088249

Mineral Sheet from home depot is

The cost is about $50 difference but they look similar.

If anyone can advise the difference would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Cap sheet roll and mineral surface roll are both roofing materials used in the construction and maintenance of flat or low-sloped roofs. However, they have differences in terms of composition, function, and appearance. Let's explore these differences:

    Cap Sheet Roll:

Composition: Cap sheet is typically made from modified bitumen, which is asphalt mixed with rubber or plastic modifiers. This gives it flexibility, durability, and resistance to weathering.
Function: Cap sheet is the topmost layer of a multi-layer built-up roofing (BUR) system or a modified bitumen roofing system. It serves as the primary weatherproofing and UV protection layer.
Appearance: Cap sheets are available in various colors and textures. They can resemble smooth surfaces or have granulated textures for improved aesthetics and weather resistance.
    Mineral Surface Roll:

Composition: Mineral surface roll, also known as mineral-surfaced roofing, is typically an asphalt-based roofing material with a layer of mineral granules embedded into the surface. These granules add durability and help protect the material from the sun's UV rays.
Function: Mineral surface roll is used as a roofing material, typically as a single-layer roofing system. It provides weatherproofing, UV protection, and durability.
Appearance: Mineral surface rolls have a textured appearance due to the embedded mineral granules. They are available in different colors and patterns to match various architectural styles.
    Key Differences:

Composition: The primary difference lies in the composition. Cap sheet is made from modified bitumen, while mineral surface roll is an asphalt-based material with embedded mineral granules.
Application: Cap sheets are often used as part of multi-layer roofing systems, whereas mineral surface rolls are standalone roofing materials.
Purpose: Cap sheets primarily serve as the topmost protective layer of a roofing system, whereas mineral surface rolls offer both protection and aesthetics.
Layering: Cap sheets are typically used in multi-layer roofing systems (like BUR or modified bitumen systems), while mineral surface rolls are usually used as a single layer.
Texture and Appearance: Mineral surface rolls have a textured appearance due to the embedded granules, while cap sheets can have a smooth or granulated appearance.
When choosing between these two roofing materials, consider factors such as your roofing system's design, climate conditions, budget, and desired aesthetics. Both materials have their advantages and can provide effective protection for flat or low-sloped roofs. Consulting with a roofing professional can help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and requirements.
