I have a gable roof system. The ceiling is insulated with the vapor barrier towards the heated area of the house.Would there be an advantage to insulating between the rafters? If so should I use faced or unfaced insulation? If faced, which direction should the vapor barrier go?

Don't waste your money and time creating a potential problem. Look through the archives on insulation and energy efficiency. Also make a trip to your local Cooperative Extension Service. Talk to your heating utility if you heat with gas and your electric utility. When you get done with all that you will know enough to make it thorough all the snake oil surrounding this subject. Then you can make some good decisions about energy efficiency and your health.
If you aren't willing to do all the homework, for whatever reason, find a good reputatable contractor design the refit and do the work. There really isn't any in between.
