Is there any reason not to run your main 3 or 4″ drain line in a crawl space along the ground, while maintaining a 1/4″ per foot drop. I have always seen the drain pipe suspended as far off the ground as possible. Thanks.

Seems a lot easier to set the correct pitch using J hangers than screwing around in the dirt.

Might the dirt wash away/shift/etc leaving some of the pipe not supported? Better to use the hangers where you know it is being supported.
It's pretty common in my area, but not a good practice in my opinion - as noted, ground will move, heave, settle etc, and it is not rare for me to see old cast iron pipe which has similary become improperly pitched

We are using ABS, and the pipe is supported from above. It does not actually sit on the ground, but just above it. It makes getting around in the crawl space less cumbersome because it is out of the way.
