I have a drainage problem in my yard and i would like to know the correct way to fix it. i have a well the is recessed on the ground about 3-4 feet with a metal sleeve that comes up to the surface. we have had heavy rain the last 2 weeks and i am getting about 2 feet of water on top of the well head. not a good thing. the previous owner (just got the house a year ago) put a sump pump on top of the well. a band aid fix.
behind the well there is a huge hill coming down to my yard with a 6′ wall wherer my yard starts. with the heavy rain there is a stream coming from the wall, not off the top of the wall but from the base. i dont know if its just run off water saturating my yard and eventually flooding the well head or if its the water table rising flooding the yard. what is the best way to fix this problem? dig a 4′ trench from the well across my back yard to drain it or to try putting a catch box where i saw the water by the wall and plumb that off the property. i want to do it once and fix it.

This sounds like a real hassle. Be careful that surface water is not entering your well head or it can contaminate your well.
Seek the help of a well driller to extend the casing upward and/or make sure that the well casing is properly sealed from the outside against surface water run-off.
Good Luck.

I would weld a casing extension on that head.
You could also buy a sanitary cap for it, but in my mind that is temporary
As it is, with that water over the cap, you are probably already in contamination phase. After you get the surface water gone, shock the well with chlorine tablets to kill coliform bacteria.

i am going to extend the well casing also. but the water is chasing the lines into the house if the pump isnt in the hole so i also have to deal with the drainage problem
That is the reason for welding on an extension, so you can bring in enough fill to have it draining away. Sorry I wasn't complete. So, you think you have drainage problems?
