a ’98 3/4 ton Ford extended van – 240K – – $3200 asking $
dunno – it’s time to be looking for another truck – the ’79 E-150 needs work, I’m tired of it, gettin’ rusty, and the radio doesn’t work…
this unit is at the local ‘used van’ dealer – the one who sells ex-fleet vehicles, late models, generally in the $4-6K range, usually with 100-150K miles –
this unit has the mid-sized small block (330 ci app. – 5.4L?) body is very good with a very small dent just in front of rear bumper, solid, with no evidence of rust on the sheet metal – doors work well, there’s a cage for the operator/passenger – – no fluid drips off the bottom – –
I dunno – – trading ‘up’ to a higher mileage vehice? – – I only drive my truck 5-7K a year – it would be nice to have the big box oftentimes, I’ve commonly got something hanging out the back –
I’d be giving up my frame hitch for the factory bumper hitch – tho that’s nothing time and $ couldn’t change
gonna take it for a drive tomorrow – claims to run/drive well, I believe it likely to be the case –
comments? opinions? observations? – I like having a vehicle that is paid for, and this kinda price I could handle…if I had to spend $2500 on a new engine in a couple of years, well, that’s cheaper than making payments….of course that leaves the trans/rear end/suspension etc, etc – dunno…

I Got an Ideeer, lemme sell ya my kenwood radio for say, 1600.00$...you SAVE 1600.00$...think of it as a kindness from me to you, and it would more'n likely square up my debt...

rainin' down there too, eh - -
no trade in - cash price - figure $3000 would get it -
probably could get $500 for my present ride without too much trouble - starts (needs new ring gear so it's loud) runs, good tires (who cares that every one is a different brand, they nearly match...), no pesky oil pressure light to worry you - @ 55 mph on a dusky highway, it looks good with the chrome bumpers..."there's enough for everyone"
yup, we got rain...I also have a intestinal disturbance, from some really funky sausage pizza..not a good day.
5 bills for the truck sounds way too cheap, but you know the market there bettern me..
If I really wanted another project I'd take it...but that 51international is callin my name {G}, I hope he wants to let go of it soon..now where do I build my garage?

I just got a '92 E-250 standard WB, 108K, 4.9L auto - $1500.
that seems like a good deal - did you answer an add? - an ex fleet vehicle?"there's enough for everyone"
Ad in the paper - turned out to be Embassy of S. Africa. All service by local Ford dealer. Took about a week to get the title back from the State Dept.
If yours has security screens on the windows as well as the partition, and those padlocks on the side and backdoors, that's worth another $500.
240K is a bit much. The bodies always rust out on me before the motors go.

4.9L
Is the the 302 V8 or the 300 straight six?

240K is a lot of miles. Many parts have had it by then, alternator, timing belt, radiator, suspension, valves, gaskets, bearings, exhaust, hoses, brake lines, etc. I would keep looking personally.
My 94 Dodge 350 super-extendo(12' bheind the seats) had 140k on it when I bought it, for $3k. Since then(4yr) I've;
1.Rebuilt the tranny 2-1/2 times. Apparently the 4spd auto's take a beating in a 1-ton ;^} But it has been a real PITA, and the weak link in the vehicle.
2. Replaced rad, H20 pump, thermo(what a pain).
3. Brakes,inc. drums&rotors
4. Exhaust- coupla' times, mostly muffler.
Other than that, and the fact that it has a drinking problem, I have no complaint. It carries anything I need, and keeps it dry.
a drinking problem HAR..!!!!!
sounds like my 460 4bbl

I tell ya, it can be bad. The worst thing- it won't run on anything less than 89 oct., either.
I keep it tuned, though I did forget to change the air filter last time.
If I keep it under 55, I get about 17mpg. At highway speeds, fugettabowdit, it goes down to about 10.
I'd be kickin that timing back a notch to MAKE it run on 87 octane by god.
I might get 7 on a good day, I try to ignore that, it hurts too much..good thing is, load or no load same MPG.

nice lookin' ride - - duel tanks too - - reminds me of the good ole days - - similar to mine with tilt, cruise, AC, etc - - wish they all worked - - here's a pict from '98, after I refreshed it from a deer hit - that was the end of the AC, never got it hooked up - - right now I would be happy if it had a new heater core...
"there's enough for everyone"
I've decided I need something bigger ...
so the search will be on soon ...
I'll have my mechanic/bodyman buddy go over the old van ... already had all the rust cut out and sheet metaled last year ... he'll sand and blast any little rust spots away and do some touch up so it's 100% bright white ... no dents ... all door seals and such are tight ... no fluid leaks ... been pretty well maintained ....
it's a great looking/running '93 Chevy One Ton with 140K miles ...
I'll list it for a bit over $2500 and happily watch it drive away for $2500.
Some have said I could get $3K .... others say nothing over $2K is the going rate ....
Time will tell ....
Your potential '98 brings that asking price up ... the 240K brings it back down.
What's it list for? Edmunds and KBB ?
I'm thinking I'd offer about what I'm looking to get for mine .... maybe the high end if it's real clean ..... I'm asking higher than the going ... I think $1,800 or so ... because mine is nice and shiny ... like I said ... time will tell.
Good Luck ... remember to beat the hell out of the tranny .. get it nice and hot ... then find a good place to drive in reverse for a while .... the van I almost bought before the current one looked great ... after my "test drive" ... barely made it back to the lot!
Even then .. the guy said "what ya talking about .. no tranny problems here ..."

good call on the 'blue book' - Kelley says $3975 - - Edmunds $4085 - - making some assumptions on how it actually runs/drives
I didn't drive it today - took a nap instead - - I did stop on the way home from market and inspect again - takes me 2-3-4 times to really absorb everything - light was just right for picking out the body rash that does exist - little dings on the box, some from inside out, some the other way - pulled up the mats, found a little bit of surface rust inside the box - crawled underneath from all sides - no spare tire/jack - the spare tire stowage mechanism under the rear appears non-working - frayed cable - muffler will probably need replaced in a year or two, but otherwise the piping appears sound - all the fastener have begun rusting (bolt heads, exposed threads, etc), but sheet metal is good, with a little surface rust starting in the back corners underneath - it's sound and presentable...
mechanically, there is the smallest sign of sepage around the rear trans seal - no drip, rather an area of oil/dirt clinging to the case -
windshield is cracked and should be replaced, tho I've driven with worse -
looks like the left front tire wears on the inside - both the front and rear tire on the left had uneven wear - front had been rotated to the back and tire on the front looked to be wearing on the inside - - bumper dented on the bottom left front and a small bit of bondo on the rocker panel under the drivers door - think someone ran over a stump and that corner needs realigned with the serious machine that the common shops don't have....
been thinking about low-balling - take it for a drive to my mechanic, if things seem in order, pull out the cash....hate playing these games - the guy is a relative of a fellow we did this job for - 28293.1 - and I think he's trying to treat me right...maybe...used car saleman...small town, if I'm gonna insult somebody, it should be someone from another area...
I'll make connections sometime this week and drive - thanks for the suggestions - "there's enough for everyone"
taking the van to your mechanic is the one thing I "demand" whenever I buy any used vehicle .... I ask everytime ... I've actually been turned down a coupla times ...
I always tell them I'll need it for most of the day ...
My "average" test drive is a minimum 4 hrs ...
I'll set something up with my buddy and we'll go for a long lunch drive ...
I drive for a coupla hrs before ... make all the mental notes ...
then he drives ... we compare notes ... then he'll do a quick all around inspection ...
list everything that needs repaired ....
If you already have the higest book value ... just start subtracting.
Then ... I drive for a bit more before heading back.
Current van was from an individual seller ...
I left my truck and keys ... offered the wallet minus the MAC card ...
then went driving. He had to take my truck back to work!
But he was confident in the van he was selling ... in the end ... I paid the full asking price ... which was a bit over the book value ... but the van was in great shape.
I've never had any major problems with any of the used stuff I buy ....
I always say I'm lucky ... the wife reminds me almost no one else take a full day test drive and brings their mechanic along with them ...
That van I killed the tranny on ... I had actually planned to make an offer that would cover a junkyard engine replacement ... as if was knocking heavy ....
The guy wouldn't knock off another $500 for a junkyard tranny swap too ...
I'll buy anything ... I have the right mechanic ... it's just gotta be at the right price.
