I have a small dywall job coming up so I pulled out my tools and I noticed the taping knives have small rust blooms on them. Once I clean these up, can I use something like WD-40 to protect them? Will that affect the compound at all?
Thanks.

johnson's paste wax will protect them if you dont use them often. The stuff also works on most other tools, like chisels, table saws etc.

Yea, wd-40 and some sand paper and dont forget to put a bastard file on the edge. Id rather use a knife weakend some by rust as long as I can get a cutting edge . Makesum easier to flex .
BTW, DW mud will polish them in a little while with the action of the pan . Muds good grit .

Hi
Silicone can cause problems in paint called fisheyes ( Especially metal). Not sue about drywall.

WD-40 ...
definitely.
my drywall tool kit always has a can of wd in it ...
a quick squirt at the end of the day ... or when I remember ... and it'll go rust free forever ...
for longer term storage ... like at the end of a given job ... a good squirt and a nice even wipe ...

My taper/spackler says he never touchs his blades or hawks with water to clean them.
He uses spackle to clean them.
He gave me demo and I was impressed.
Be well
