tony, thats all I use all the time. If the framing is sound you wont have any problems and if it isnt, no tape will stop it from moving. I do always use a setting type drywall mud I mix from powder for the first coat since it sets faster and harder than premix.

Around here we use the paper tape mostly, except for cement board and such. Never had a problem with a name brand premix either.

That's the key, I think. If you use just the soft
premixed stuff without a hard base coat and then
build up 2 or 3 layers of skim over it, you may very
well get cracking. The stuff shrinks too much.
I, and most of us I guess, use a hard coat to bury
the tape, then a soft, easy to sand top 2 coats (or
more if you wanna get picky).
