ANyone read “Dwell” magazine? They co-sponsored a competition along with an art museum in South carolina to come up with plans for a “greener,” “more sustainable” Habitat for Humanity house that would also have more amenities than the usual Habitat house. I kept waiting for them to have some article about the competition, the winning entries, etc. Never saw it, so I finally emailed them about it. First, they directed me to email someone besides the editor, because she was on maternity leave (how stupid of me not to have known that!). Then someone said that it wasn’t sponsored by Habitat (I never said it was) and finally this evening they replied tersely, “No, they did not cover it.”
Wouldn’t you think if you were a magazine that sponsored a competition you would do a story on it and the results of it? Seems like they really missed a chance to talk about some fascinating new design ideas. Oh well. There were many (several hundred (IIRC, about 800)) entries, mostly from large architectural firms and schools of architecture. Supposedly they were going to build several of the best designs. Would like to have seen them! Silly me; I thought they would be in the magazine.
I suggested they do a new competition for good, efficient and sturdy replacement housing for the Gulf Coast. Don’t think they listened. Story of my life.
