Electric floor heat thermostat fried
Trying to troubleshoot an electrical problem –
After 5yrs of trouble-free use, the thermostat on our EasyHeat under tile heating system stopped working. It happened at the same time that an electrician was adding new outlets/switches to a sub-panel that previously was only connected to the master bath. The sub-panel is 100amps on a 200amp service. The electrician disconnected the thermostat, observed brown discoloration on the inside and said we needed a new thermostat. My husband ordered and installed a new thermostat and within 10 minutes it started smelling hot and then stopped working. The electrician didn’t admit to disconnecting and reconnecting the floor heat while adding new circuits to the sub-panel. The new circuits are to a renovated kitchen and new family room and laundry room. Is there an obvious error in making connections at the sub-panel that could cause this circuit to fry thermostats?
Thanks for any help,
Laura

Never heard of EasyHeat, so googled it quick, seems it comes as 120 or 240 heat tiles.
If 120 V tile heating circuits were re-connected 240 vs. 120, dat wud doit! Dat would also have turned a perfectly good t-stat brown too.
Post more info - total number of heat tiles, the voltage theyare supposed to be, etc..
That was it! DH bought a 120V thermostat not realizing it was a 240V system. Thanksfor your help.So is 5yrs a normal life for a thermostat? DH is still concerned that something happened in the sub-panel (or to the wires in the basement) that caused the original thermostat to go and we're all going to go up in flames.
