about how much should it cost to re-wire a 1600 square foot house?
It is a total gut and remodel. all the sheet rock has been stripped from walls and ceiling. Interior walls are new and open.
The price should include removing all exising wire (agian, walls, ceiling open) and starting over. The meter will stay in original locaton, after that, a new service wire will be ran to a new 240 panel. after that, outlets, lights, smoke detectors for living room, kitchen (stove, fridge) 2 baths, 4 bedrooms. Each bedroom also gets closet lights.
There are to be no fixtures in this price.
located in raleigh, nc.

Conduit or Romex? How many fixtures total? What's the load calc? One or two stories?
I just finished two houses in the Oakwood neighborhood of Raleigh. The one was a complete gut job, too -- about 1900 sq. ft, one-story bungalow. I ended up doing the electrical work myself (i.e. my dad, the electrical engineer/electrician did it), so the price couldn't be beat -- $0 for labor.
But, I did get a couple quotes beforehand, and the price worked out to be about $3500, or roughly $40/outlet. The price of copper wire has gone up remarkably in the last couple months, so that figure may be a lot higher now.
I'd be happy to give you the name of a couple electricians (as well as other help) in the area. I hadn't used them extensively, but it's a start.
Good luck!

Someplace between $$$$ and $$$$$
Copper sticker shock a'coming.
Had a garage sale last weekend. Lady needed 230 feet of 10 AWG thhn. Sold 230' to her off my big rolls (surplus @ $1 /#) for $15.
Looked up the price of a 500 ft roll of 10 awg thhn on the grainger web site - shock - $169!!!, so gave her a good deal, but it was a garage sale.
That said, think I could rewire a 1600 sq ft house with what there is in storage (panel and all) for under $200 for what I paid for what is in storage, no labor cost of course.
Need to watch out for what I sell out of my stash!
let me know when the next garage sale is,i'd drive a ways to buy #10 wire for 6 cents a foot. i'd take it all . lol larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
Just received this estimate. I am on the coast. About 1300 Sq ft
