I do a lot of 2nd and 3rd story decks and I wonder if anyone has an alternative to joist hangers. Some suggested “pressure blocking”(a block between the joists) but is this acceptable. It seems to me the shear is the same. Also I usually have no room for a ledger.Any help would be good.Andrew

Free standing decks is an alternative to a ledger board, but I would not advocate a free standing deck 3 stories up. Yikes!
Here in SoCal, joist hangers are the only alternative, and one can not use any form of wooden blocking as an alternative. They are simply stronger than a 2x4.
I guess I don't understand why you think you don't have room for a ledger. Jeez, assuming one nails a ledger over studs, it only adds 1 1/2 inches. Must be a pretty short deck, huh?
*Maybe he's talking about a '' ledger" under the joists , maybe interfering with windows or doors below. I'd stick with the hangers and paint them if it really bothered me . I dont like the idea of sand wiching two peices of wood together when it can be avoided .Just one more place to trap water . Chuck
