Fastening cedar shingle siding

| Posted in General Discussion on January 14, 1999 03:09am

Hi Ron,
I have a Bostich stapler that has a 1/2″ crown and shoots up to a 2″ staple. I actually bought it because I has several hundred sq. ft. of cedar shake siding to install. It worked great for me. I did that job about 7 yrs ago and saw it just the other day. It looks as good as the day I did it. What I like about it is it dousn’t split the cedar but wraps around a 1/2″ section of it and sucks it to the wall. As always on here ther will be someone who has other reasons for prefering something else. I look forward to their point of view. One mans opinion. SteveM

Ron-I use a Senco SNS45 7/16" stapler for cedar shingles and love it! I have used coil nailers but I am not as impressed. It seems that staplers use less air so it's easier for a compressor to keep up with. My stapler is also faster and lighter than my coil nailer. The Senco is a bit expensive but well worth it in my opion.Good luck.

Go for staples every time. Cheaper, better, faster. I've done too many homes w/ WC in southern new england and have found staplers the way to go. Better holding power than nails any day. Just remember, only 2per shingle. I like 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" staples. long enough to go through 1/2" sheathing. Angle nose downward a little to resist withdrawarl.

*Thanks for the responses. Are stainless staples avail. ? Or should I just go with the electro galvanized? The house is 2 miles from the ocean.

Ron- Stainless staples are available. We don't use them here in Montana, but we don't have the moisture problems the Atlantic ocean creates. Another plus for staples over coil nails is they are alot cheaper, especially if you go stainless. I just paid $165 for a box of 3000 stainless coil nails for a clapboard siding job to give you an idea. I also use a brad nailer for weaving the corners. Have fun.

*Ron, Definitely go with the stainless. For the relative small price difference you'll sleep better.

I am installing white cedar shingle siding and am looking for advice on using staplers or nailers instead of hand nailing. (I still plan on hand nailing any face nails.) Staplers such as the Porter Cable ms200 are less expensive than coil nailers, but I have been told by some that they hold better than nails and have been told by others that they don't hold well at all.
