I purchased some aluminum downspouts and matching “hooks” that fasten the downspout to the side of the house. This is my first time dealing with downspouts, am scratching my head a little at how these fasteners work. Here’s a photo:
These are hinged on one side and close around the downspout. How do you keep them closed, though? Seems like something should pull those two hooks on the righthand side together.
And as far as fastening these to the house, do you simply drill a deep hole and tap the thing in?

They won't upgrade our lines because they say we aren't a "community" because we don't have a post office or church. But Port Renfrew at the end of the road, with only 300 people, get subsidized high speed. Bunch of whiners.

My cell phone dies about 25kms away - just as you are leaving the nearest town on a winding road where you might actually need it.
Funny about the picture.
I believe that holder is intended for masonry walls, and would be held closed with twisted wire.
To hold the clamp closed, wire-tie the two hooks together. And yes, to mount it, drill an undersized hole in the wall and tap the bracket in.

Drill a slightly larger hole in your masonry wall. Drive a properly sized cedar plug in the hole. I use cedar shingle scraps. Drive your hanger into that. Use a like material piece of wire to close it.

I guess you can use them in wood. I've seen it done, but they don't hold very well. I don't use them at all. If the downspout clogs or freezes, it can slide through those hangers. I prefer straps positively attached to the spouts and the wall. Those hangers look nice, though. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image
