I posted this over at JLC when someone asked about fastening stringers at the top. Got some positive feedback, so I thought I’d post it here too!
Here’s something I figured out one day, and I usually use it when I have a step down off of the platform to the first tread. Just notch the stringer around the rim joist, and run it back up to the next joist. Run some blocking and nail/screw it all together. (I left out some blocking for this visual)
You can see that you have almost the same amount of meat as in in the main part of the stringer.
Seems pretty strong to me, but I’d like to hear what others think ..
I’ll post the .skp file too in case anyone wants to check it out.

This picture was something I drew for soemone at JLC a while back also useing gluelams for stringers..
Not as good as mine. :)
A few 1/2" by 8" carraige bolts makes my stairs solid as rock.
I have done it your way too. Works well but the stairs still have a little bounce to them.
What the problem is?

Yep, that's a pretty good way of doin it.I just wish there was some LVL type material that we could outdoors.
"I just wish there was some LVL type material that we could outdoors."I've used Treated Gluelams before. "Rosbors Treated Gluelams".I haven't used them for stringers but I used them on a job about 5 months ago connecting into a deck with a trellis on top.You will see in the one picture where I nailed (2)3-1/2 x 11-7/8" gluelams up against the deck girders how much lighter in color they are compared to the green acq.At first I thought they weren't treated and was ready to call the lumberyard when I looked at the writing on the one side of the beam and realized it was. You'll see that in the other picture.Joe Carola
How long ago was this? Two years ago I needed to replace a 24' beam under a sunroom and my lumber yard said they didn't have any treated glulams. Or, maybe, the company they get theirs from didn't carry them, maybe?

I just looked at the date and it was in January. Those two beams were also 24". They're on the lower right side in the picture.Joe Carola
Thanks, maybe treated is new, but I think my yard doesn't carry the line that has them. Something I'll remember next time, thanks.

not new. I got treated glulam 6x24 x 28' ten years agoI got treated LVL 6x10x 20' three years agoThey do have to be ordered. Expensive, so they don't stock the things
