I am in the process of building a small (16X16) foot second story deck that will have a screen room under. Construction will be conventional framing 16 inch on center with 3/4 t&g plywood as the deck substrate. I was considering using fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin for sealing and the same for flashing on the two sides that join with the existing structure. Over this I had planned concrete backerboard set in thinset morter with quarry tile over. Has any on this list ever had any experience with a fiberglassed roof structure as I have descibed? I am an amature boadbuilder and always use Epoxy Resin but for this application maybe polyester resin is acceptable. It is about 1/2 the price. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Mike

Yes, I've done glass boat layup, and repair with epoxy and polyester. Did a fiberglass roof about 10x12 in 1980 with a deck against a vertical wall, with two wing walls for privacy. Roof still in fine shape. There was a good article on glass roofs in JLC about a year ago.
In 1999, I would have to say that I would use an EPDM, say 60 mil, fully adhesed, and then I would put down a slip sheet and lay my cement board on a pitched deck with a scupper draining to daylight. But how are you going to keep the cement board from walking without mechanically fastening it thru the fiberglass into the roof deck ? Anyway, then I would lay my quarry tile, if I wanted tile. Do you want tile ?, if this is going to be casual use I would probably use a mineral surface modified bitumen like Colphene or Low Slope on a plywood deck, with good flashing details.
Colphene has a nice primer that almost welds the layers. If you got wear areas, you could flood the surface and broadcast a new mineral surface on top. Or lay a new modified right over the first one.
There are some nice decking materials that go down over waterproof roofs that may fit the bill as a substitute for the attractiveness of the quarry tile.
As you know, working with glass outdoors is always tricky trying to make sure it will kick in low temperatures.

Mike, thanks for the reply.
Did you use epoxy or polyester resin on you deck? As far as fastening the backerboard I had planned on setting it in thinset. I have two similar but smaller deck on the house already. In those cases I put the backerboard down over tourch down single membrane roofing. (only 5 foot wide decks) The thinset seems to have held the backer board just fine. The new deck will get a great deal of use and to match the others and the patio below the quarry tile is a must. BTW, the other decks are now 10 years old and holding up great. We live in Florida though (no freezing).
What publication are you refering to (JLC)
Thanks,
Mike Worley
