I’m getting ready to restain cedar siding which has been in service five years. In that time a number of knots have popped out. What is the best way to fill these before restaining? Thanks.

I suggest it depends on the type of stain. If the pigment content is sufficient to mask the filler, I would use a two part epoxy.
Bondo with a little of the goop from the bottom of the minwax stain that matches closly...use the red hardner not the blue if ya are matching a wood tone...
easy on the goop..it makes the bondo set slower.

Back cut the hole, maybe, like a concrete patch, to keep it the plug from popping out? Nice thing with Bondo is it's cheap and you can draw a grain in it to match the cedar. I once backed out of a diagonal parking space and bumped a car driven by a kid driving too fast up the lane. Knocked his whole front fender off -- must have been twenty pounds of Bondo there, all pink on the asphalt. No damage to mine. I gave him my insurance info, but never heard about it afterward. I wouldn't have made a claim, either, had I been him.

Whatever you fill it with will look like a filler.
so........my suggestion is after you fill it. Take a windsor/Newton 000 artist brush and some black oil paint and paint in some cracks/grain to make it appear real.
