With the help of some folks who know what they are doing, I just completed a new deck off our dining room. The decking is clear Cedar. I am looking for some suggestions on preservative/finish. Something on-toxic is preferred.

Well its Toxic but without a doubt "Superdeck" is the ultimate. Follow the directions to the T and be very careful with the soiled rags when your done.
*Forgot to tell ya...Its from Duckback Products,Inc. Checkout http://www.superdeck.com

Steven, use TWP by gemini coatings. t.w.p.
James DuHamel from this website highly recommended it, so I used it on a cedar deck I did and it looks outstanding. Consumer reports top-rated it recently.
good luck
*Sand it all with 80 grit paper and a random orbit sander....blow it all off with air(get rid of the dust). Try http://www.weatherbos.com It is expensive...but will not fail. I have personally sprayed this stuff on wet pine posts...stuck in the ground, and no shedding. It is ammonia bases...water soluble and bio degradable. Ohh, and you can do the initial application with a weed sprayer. Pricey...but a great product, they use it mainly on log homes...but I love it for decks.LMost of the work on my website used Weather bos Coatings
*Superdeck is the only stain we recommend. It is by far the best stain on the market. We know, we have been using it for years.
*You may find interesting info on this subject here.http://www.askthebuilder.com/cgi-bin/bulletin?180:00175For sure you have to remove the mill glaze on cedar or nothing will work well. Pigmented stains work best to block the ultraviolet effect but over time the traffic areas will lighten up. Re-staining just compounds the problems. Do a google search on TWP, I think it is the best.
*Jim- Where did you pick this stuff up in Seattle? I've got a deck to finish sometime in the next few weeks.... Pretty good weather we've been having.... Sam
*Hi Sam,The only place in Washington that has it is Wood Care systems in Kirkland. (425) 827-6000.
*Thanks Jim. Sam
*Steven,You might try to spray the bottom of the decking as well to avoid cupping which will occur shortly after applying finish to the topside.David
