Good Evening,
Has anyone had any experience with an Owens Corning Basement Finishing System. The quote that I received for this system was about $30,000 to make one finished room in the basement by putting up one straight partition wall, covering the other three foundation walls with rigid insulation/fabric, and putting in a drop ceiling. The finished room would be about 750 sq.ft. It also included outlets around the perimeter and the ceiling lighting. No flooring or mechanical i.e. heating is included in the price. The quote seems expensive. Is the quality of this system and the insulation benefits that much better than a contractor using studs and drywall to finishing the room in my basement? I live in Massachusetts.
I would appreciate any opinions on finishing a basement.
Thank You, Andrew

Andrew, I have bid against the OC system along with one by Champion (windows). They were 35-50.00 a s.f. I offered 20 and 30 for what I would call more finished, better work. Easy to do unless you like the office cubical look. In most cases the Finishing Systems are way more costly than a good contractor done job.
They do seem to play the "mold" card also.
Best of luck.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

I agree with Calvin. They play the mold card alot and also play up the "much quicker, much cleaner" installation. No drywall dust, etc, etc.
The installation time is cut down as everything is snapped together. Track is fastened to the wall, panels snap into the track, then trim is snapped into the panels.
I am friends with someone that works for a company that sells one of these systems. From what he tells me, $30,000 grand is a pretty average price for one of their basic basements. Ouch!
$30G....OUCH!
I've seen the ads for those systems....I've considered looking into becoming an installer.
Now I'm wondering what my cut might be on a number like that?

We subcontract installs from the local franchise owner( I stll had to go to O/C to get certified). Charge by actual lineal foot for everything. 750sqft room should be $3-4k install labor only, materials all supplied by franchise and on site when we get there. Should be a 3 day job. Not bad for filling in the schedule. BTW just 2 of us working.Greg

I agree with Calvin and similar 20 to 30 for this area.

Your price seems to be in the ballpark for O/C. I'm a little biased because I have been an O/C Certified Basement Installer for some time now. The system does go up fast and clean. 750 sqft should be done in an average of 3 days. 4 days tops. System is very easy to clean. Stain resistent, mold resistant. Easy to get behind to run more communication wires, etc.
However, if you actually succeed in poking a hole in one of the walls( pool cue, etc.) expect to pay for a new panel and install labor.
From what i've seen and done they hold up very well. Lifetime warranty.
Your room will be very comfortable and also very quiet. But if you like the look and feel of drywall you won't like it.
